NBSR 9801 was built as GP35 #7777 for the Southern Pacific in November 1965. It was acquired as SP 6674 and rebuilt to GP38-3 specifications by CLN Industries.

For several years, 9801 and sisters NBSR 9802 and NBSR 9803 were the only GP38 locomotives on the railway.

In mid June 2011 it was relettered as Maine Northern Railway #9801 (MNR 9801).
