NB Southern slug 008 was purchased in May 2008. It was CN 519, built in March 1980 as CN 279 and renumbered to CN 519 in 1990.
After being temporarily named NBSR 2008 for the trip to Saint John, it was refurbished and took its first main-line trip in July 2009.
NBSR 008 has been paired with NBSR 2318, which has had the modifications necessary to be paired with the slug.
The slug has no diesel engine, but does have electric traction motors. It draws its power from the paired engine, the “mother”, which has extra power available at low speeds. The slug provides extra traction and braking power at low speeds. NB Southern’s equipment cuts power to the slug above 25 MPH as there isn’t enough spare power from the mother’s generator/alternator at higher speeds. More information on slugs
