Much more information has been written about the Canadian Government Railways than I could ever hope to write. This page will attempt to provide an overview of the CGR’s history in New Brunswick.
On April 1, 1916 these government-owned railways were merged into the CGR:
- New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Railway
On May 20, 1918 seven New Brunswick railways were merged with the CGR:
- Salisbury and Albert Railroad Company
- St. Martins and Upham Railroad
- York and Carleton Railroad
The CGR eventually became part of the Canadian National Railway system together with the Canadian Northern Railway system in 1919.
The Caraquet and Gulf Shore Railway Company was absorbed into the CGR system on June 1, 1920.
