The CP Montana subdivision runs from the Canada-USA border at Coutts to Montana, AB and a junction with the CP Taber subdivision. This line was originally built as the narrow gauge Alberta Railway & Coal Company. As the Alberta Railway & Irrigation Company, it was taken over by CP on April 1, 1912.

The subdivision operates under the Occupancy Control System (OCS) between Brunton and Montana. The first 2.1 miles between the international border and Brunton is not main track.
