The CN Gordon Yard in Moncton is their principal yard in New Brunswick. All of CN’s long-distance trains stop here and most of the local trains originate from this yard.
Like many yards, Gordon Yard used to be much larger than it is now. The hump yard has been removed and all switching is done in a flat yard.
CN’s hump yard was officially opened on November 4, 1960. It wasn’t until mid 1979 when it was renamed to Gordon Yard in honour of former CN president Donald Gordon. Thanks to Wendell Lemon for the information.
The engine maintenance shed was sold to IRSI, which was a full-service locomotive and passenger car repair facility. It went bankrupt and it’s not clear who owns the facility now.
A large part of the yard is now taken up with intermodal containers and trucking, as well as the automobile handling that used to be near the VIA station in downtown Moncton.
