Terra Transport Lives

The last incarnation of the Newfoundland Railway, Terra Transport, hasn’t run trains since 1988, but you can still see bits of it here and there on the CN network.

Terra Transport switched freight from boxcars to these distinctive green containers in an attempt to reduce freight handling and therefore costs. I don’t know how many of these containers were purchased but they have persisted for decades. There used to be a wall of them in Gordon Yard in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Here in Winnipeg there are at least two of them in Symington Yard. I have seen them often but I thought it was important to photograph them. They won’t be here forever.

Update!

I was scanning old negatives and came across these photos that I took from DeLong Drive in Moncton, showing CN’s Gordon Yard with the Terra Transport containers.

They used to form a wall around the yard, to keep trespassers out, I guess.

I don’t have a date for the photos but they would have been taken sometime in 2000, 2001 or 2002.

  1. I did not realize what that logo was ! I’ve seen them somewhere now I need to remember where so I can go and photograph them. Thank you for sharing this, nice addition to my collection if I can find them.

    Happy Holiday Season Steve !!
