The Soo Line’s Famous Trains to Canada – Review

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Terry Gainer’s third book, “The Soo Line’s Famous Trains to Canada“.

The Soo Line is now a subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Kansas City. The original Soo Line was the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie RR (“Sault” is pronounced “Soo”). It eventually became part of Canadian Pacific Railway and formed an integral part of its network. Several passenger trains on the Soo Line continued on into Canada and this train describes them well.

The Soo Line is a railway that hasn’t been as well covered as others, in my opinion, but this book helps fill that gap. Trains covered include the Winnipeger (St. Paul MN to Winnipeg MB) and the Soo-Dominion / Mountaineer (Chicago – Vancouver). That’s the Mountaineer on the cover, photographed by Nicholas Morant in 1955 at what became known as “his” curve.

Terry Gainer lived at the Banff train station and later worked there, and his personal recollections of the trains really enhanced the book.

It’s coming out this fall, but you can preorder it here: https://rmbooks.com/book/the-soo-lines-famous-trains-to-canada/

I’ve reviewed his previous books here: When Trains Ruled the Rockies and When Trains Ruled the Kootenays.
