CN Car Control Manual, PEI, 1980

This is a CN Car Control manual for Prince Edward Island in February 1980, covering the Borden, Kensington, Montague, Murray Harbour and Souris subdivisions. The manual is from the collection of John Stewart of Charlottetown and was scanned by Taylor Main.

Car control manuals were used to track where rail cars were set out and picked up. Each siding had a number, and that was used to note where a car was left. Some sidings had more than one number to indicate different spots on the same track – for example, grain elevators would share the same track.

These manuals are a great resource for the railway historian, as they indicate what industries were active (or recently active) and also shows the track arrangement and the length of each siding. The track drawings themselves are not particularly accurate but they give the general arrangement of the tracks.

I’m grateful to Taylor Main for scanning this – he has scanned a few that are published here – and thanks should go to John Stewart for allowing this to be scanned. I know a few people who will be glad to see this.
