CN at Dufresne

I was recently contacted by someone who wanted a photo of a train by the Dufresne, Manitoba grain elevator. I went through my Lightroom catalog and found that I had quite a few! I’m going to share most of them without much comment here. These images are in ascending date order.

I ended up getting two trains on the same day in Dufresne – the lead photo and the one above.

It was a lovely sunset in late May 2018 when I photographed this train passing the elevator.

The only black and white shot of the series is below. The sun wasn’t in a good spot so I decided to edit it as B&W.

Just One More Thing

I just finished reading Better Buses, Better Cities by Steven Higashide. Like many transit advocates, the author believes that better transit improves life in cities for everyone – not just the bus riders but walkers and car drivers as well. The book basically teaches you how to successfully advocate for improved transit in your city, citing numerous examples where advocates succeeded – and failed – in their efforts.

I receive a small commission when you buy something on Amazon using my links, at no cost to you.

It was an easy read, and an inspiring one. One thing I took away from the book was that it’s nice to be an advocate for improved transit, but it’s better to take action. I know I need to be better at writing to various levels of government to push for better transit. The intercity transit in the Prairies basically disappeared after Greyhound pulled out, and numerous cities are freezing or reducing transit spending. They have to learn that transit is an investment, not an expense.

If you’re at all interested in improving public transit, you should read this book.

Buy Better Buses, Better Cities on Amazon, or maybe find it in your local library!

  1. I have never seen the Dufresne (pronounced du-frane) elevator in person, so your photos were a visit trackside; especially liked the B W one. Your photo library must be awesome.

    • Hi Steve, I’m glad to show the elevator to you! (yes, “du-frane”)

I have about 160,000 images in my photo library – probably 90% mine – so I have a bit of depth in there. 😉

  2. Thank you for posting this blog. I have the photo I purchased from you in my office and get many compliments. I gave the others to my mom for her birthday. We had a family farm in Dufresne for over 100 years. I remember falling asleep to the sound of the train in the distance. Great memories. Thank you for sharing this!

    • Hi Denyse, thanks for commenting! I’m glad you are enjoying the photo and that it brings back good memories. Thanks again for your order.
