Efficient Railfanning

The Canadian Pacific line north of Lake Superior is very scenic – possibly rivaling their lines through the Rocky Mountains. On our way home from Toronto in late August, I had the opportunity to do a tiny bit of railfanning on the long, long trip home.

A Nice Variety

On October 2, 2021 I set out mid-morning to visit the model train open house in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The Portage Model Railroad Club periodically has open houses and I hadn’t seen their layouts in a while… plus it was an excuse to get out of the house, something I think we all need … Read more

A Quick Moncton Visit

VIA Rail train in Moncton

I was in Moncton, New Brunswick for a quick visit several weeks ago. I was there for work, so I didn’t take many photos of trains, but I’ll share what I did take. As you can see from the lead photo, I caught VIA Rail’s “Ocean” coming into the city.

GO Transit and More, Part 5

This is the 5th and final part of a series. Go here to read part 1 if you wish. After leaving the Bathurst Street bridge – a very good spot to railfan from – I walked east beside the Toronto downtown tracks toward Union Station. Another pair of UP Express trains passed me as I … Read more

GO Transit and More, Part 4

In late August 2021, my daughter moved to Toronto to attend college there. We are very proud of her for being accepted, and she’s doing well so far. Of course we are sad that she isn’t living at home any more. Her cats miss her too. We packed some of her stuff into the back … Read more

Canadian Pacific business train west of Winnipeg, Manitoba

I heard that the CP “business train” was running empty through Winnipeg on its way to the east coast of Canada. Canadian Pacific has recently reacquired the “Short Line” through Maine, sold in 1995 as part of CP’s abandonment of the east, and has made a partnership with the NB Southern Railway to ship to … Read more
