Amtrak operates a coast-to-coast passenger rail network in the USA. They inherited a large collection of passenger equipment from American freight railways, and over time Amtrak has evolved into several areas:
- The Northeast Corridor services from Boston through Philadephia, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore to Washington
- Transcontinental railway services (the “National Network”)
- State-supported short haul service outside the Corridor
Transcontinental railway services include famous named trains like the Capitol Limited, the California Zephyr, the Texas Eagle and the Empire Builder.
